Your library stays under your control. Watchly does not automatically upload your library, ratings, notes, or watch history to its publisher. TMDB receives search and catalog requests, including network information, and may collect data as explained below.
Who this policy covers
This policy covers Watchly: TV & Movie Journal for iPhone and this public website. “We” and “us” refer to its publisher, Teofil Voivozeanu. Questions can be sent to teofil.voivozeanu@gmail.com.
Information stored on your device
Watchly creates a local record only after you interact with a movie or TV show. Depending on the actions you take, the app can store:
- Movie and TV identifiers, titles, poster paths, years, and genre identifiers.
- Watchlist and Favorite selections.
- Movie watched status, watched date, and runtime captured for statistics.
- TV status and watched season/episode progress, dates, and captured runtimes.
- Your whole-star ratings and free-text notes.
- The date a local title record was created.
- Generated News events for release or season dates, including whether you dismissed them.
This information is stored in Watchly's private app storage and is used to display your library, progress, personal statistics, and release updates. We do not operate an account or library-sync server and do not receive a copy unless you choose to send one to us, for example in a support email.
TMDB catalog and network requests
Watchly uses TMDB for movie and TV discovery and metadata. When a feature needs current information, your device communicates directly with TMDB and its image service over HTTPS. Requests can include:
- Search text you enter, genre filters, and request page numbers.
- Movie, TV-show, and season identifiers.
- Requests for trending or popular titles, genres, cast, external identifiers, image configuration, and digital watch-provider availability.
- Standard network information such as your IP address, which is necessarily visible to the remote service and network providers.
TMDB is an independent service and handles information under its own Privacy Policy and terms. Watchly does not send TMDB your personal ratings, notes, Watchlist or Favorite flags, watched history, episode progress, or exported backup.
Requests for details and release updates can include identifiers of titles saved in your library. TMDB can therefore see which titles are requested, even though the app does not upload your journal or the status of those titles.
TMDB's policy covers its API and describes collection of API usage, search-related information, IP addresses, device or network identifiers, and approximate location derived from IP addresses. It describes uses that include delivering services, analytics, improving and personalizing products, marketing, security, and legal obligations, and sharing with affiliates, service providers, and other partners. The policy covers multiple TMDB services and does not specify which practices apply to every Watchly request.
App Store privacy disclosure
Watchly's App Store listing includes the following data categories for the TMDB integration:
- Search History: search text sent to TMDB.
- Coarse Location: approximate location that may be inferred from your IP address.
- Device ID: device or network identifiers covered by TMDB's policy.
- Product Interaction: activity reflected in catalog and search requests.
- Other Usage Data: other API and network usage information.
The current label declares these categories as data that may be linked to you, used for App Functionality and Analytics, and not used for tracking. It takes a conservative approach to TMDB's published practices because TMDB has not provided Watchly-specific confirmation of retention, linkage, or tracking. We will review this disclosure when more specific information becomes available.
Watchly has no advertising or analytics SDK and does not read your advertising identifier, Apple device-vendor identifier, or GPS location. We do not operate behavioral analytics or track you across other companies' apps and websites. The third-party processing described above is covered by TMDB's policy.
Watch-provider information
Digital availability information is returned by TMDB through its partnership with JustWatch. Watchly selects results on your device using its region setting and may fall back to United States results. It does not request GPS access or send that region setting as a separate request parameter. The app displays provider names and logos from TMDB and does not connect directly to JustWatch or send it your local library.
Operational caches
Watchly keeps regenerable technical caches so the app loads efficiently: downloaded artwork in the app's cache directory, plus TMDB genre and image configuration data in iOS preferences. These caches do not contain your ratings, notes, Watchlist, Favorites, or watch history. iOS may remove cache files when storage is needed.
Backup and restore
You can export a JSON backup using Apple's system file exporter. The backup contains your movie, TV, and episode tracking records, including ratings and notes. It does not contain generated News events or image/configuration caches.
You choose where the file is saved. That destination may be local storage or a cloud-backed Files provider. Once exported, the file is controlled by you and by the storage provider you selected, under that provider's policies. Watchly's publisher does not receive the file. Import reads only the Watchly backup that you select through the system file picker.
Depending on your device settings, Apple's iCloud or computer backups may also include Watchly's local app data. Those backups are managed through Apple and your backup settings; Watchly does not provide automatic library sync between devices. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
Retention and deletion
Local library records remain until you change or delete them, use Profile > Settings > Clear Data, or delete the app. Clear Data deletes movie, TV, episode-progress, and News records from Watchly's local database. It does not delete JSON backups that you saved elsewhere, and it does not currently clear regenerable image, genre, or configuration caches.
Deleting Watchly removes its app container from the device under normal iOS behavior; offloading the app keeps its documents and data. Copies exported to Files and copies in device backups must be managed separately through the relevant storage provider or backup settings.
Clear Data does not erase information already processed by TMDB. TMDB says retention depends on business needs, the purpose of processing, and legal requirements; its policy does not give a fixed retention period for Watchly API requests. For access or deletion requests concerning TMDB-held data, follow its Privacy Policy or contact privacyrequest@xperi.com.
Support and privacy emails
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message, and any attachments you choose to include. We use them to respond to your request and investigate reported problems. Messages are handled through our email provider and kept only as needed for those purposes or legal obligations. You can request deletion by emailing the contact address below. Please avoid sending private notes or a full library backup unless needed to explain your issue.
What Watchly does not include
- No Watchly account, login, or server-side user profile.
- No advertising or advertising SDK.
- No analytics, crash-reporting SDK, or behavioral telemetry operated by us.
- No cross-app or cross-website tracking operated by Watchly's publisher.
- No purchases, subscriptions, or payment processing in the current version.
- No request for GPS location, contacts, photo-library, camera, or microphone access.
Children's privacy
Watchly does not knowingly collect personal information from children and provides no account, messaging, advertising, or social-profile feature. If the product's data practices change, this policy and the relevant consent requirements will be reviewed before the change is released.
Your choices and rights
You can view and change your Watchly data inside the app, export a portable copy through Profile > Settings > Export Data, or delete the local database through Clear Data. We cannot remotely retrieve, correct, or erase the library on your device. Contact us for requests concerning information you sent us by email. For information held by TMDB, Apple, a Files provider, or another service you chose, contact that provider directly.
Watchly has no separate switch to disable TMDB requests while using its online features. To prevent further requests, stop using the app or use it without a network connection. Discovery, search, and uncached artwork or details require a connection; previously saved library data remains on your device.
This website
This website is made of static pages and does not contain advertising, analytics, tracking pixels, account forms, or cookies set by us. It is hosted through GitHub Pages. GitHub may process technical request information needed to deliver the pages under GitHub's Privacy Statement.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page before shipping a material change to Watchly's data practices and will revise the effective date above. Earlier versions may be retained in the public website repository's history.
